Introduction to Monastic Practice: 1 day retreat at Great Vow
With Senior Lay Practitioner and/or Ordained Priest

This one-day in-person workshop at Great Vow Zen Monastery is for those who want an introduction to practice and to the monastery.
Learn how to practice using ancient methods that are applicable in today’s world:
- Basic posture instruction and guidance on sitting with stability
- Carrying practice into our daily life
- Chanting
- Seated and walking Meditation
- Tradition and Ritual
During this retreat we will practice in the meditation hall – participating in seated and walking meditation. Guidance on basic posture and meditation instructions will be given. At midday we will share a community lunch with guests and residents of the monastery.
After lunch there will be an informal Q & A and another period of seated and walking meditation.
Tentative Schedule
9:30 arrival and check – in
10:00 meditation and instruction
12:15 chanting service
12:45 Lunch
2:30 Q & A
3:30 Seated and walking meditation
4:30 departure

A senior lay practitioner and/or an ordained priest will be guiding this retreat. The ordained priests have been practicing for many years at Great Vow Zen Monastery, leading retreats and teaching classes.
