Foundations: Online Course In Buddhism

This is an 8-month education program for practitioners with the Zen Community of Oregon. This program brings people together twice a month through Dharma education and practice. Through study, presentations, group discussion and personal practice, this course provides an opportunity to learn experience the foundational Buddhist teachings.

Goals for the course

  • Understanding of Buddhist teachings and history influenced by the unique expression of practice within the Zen Community of Oregon.
  • Nurture a community of committed people of the Buddha Way.
  • Provide a way for people to deepen their personal practice.

Requirements

  • Commitment to attend monthly Saturday class.
  • Attendance at additional monthly small group practice discussion.
  • Preparation (readings, video or audio talks) between classes.

Pre-requisites

  • ZCO membership.
  • Completion of application. The program is at no cost.

  1. Overview of Mahayana, Theravada, and Vajrayana Buddhism
  2. Bodhisattva ideal and bodhisattva vows
  3. Ancestors and Lineage
  4. Teacher student relationship
  5. Rituals and home practice
  6. Ethics, Vows and Intention
  7. Current issues in Buddhism
  8. Sangha: structure and working of Zen Community of Oregon

Meditation practices

  1. Posture
  2. Meta-cognitive intelligence and concentration sprints
  3. Adding and subtracting intensity, enlivening and calming
  4. Directing intention…moving awareness within the body and from focal to expanded
  5. Identifying hindrances and the inner critic
  6. Impermanence
  7. Paramitas and the Divine Abodes
  8. Shikantaza

Format

Teacher presenters on core topics. Each gathering includes group breakouts, guided meditations or other experiential teaching.

Readings and dharma talks compiled by the instructors and shared as e-documents. Written materials support the experiential and presentations and organized around the theme of the particular gathering.

In between monthly classes, small groups will meet to share personal practice.

Patrick Bansho Green has practiced with the Zen Community of Oregon since 2004 and received Lay Transmission from Chozen Bays and Hogen Bays in 2019, priest ordination in 2021, and completed Preceptor Authorization and Dharma Transmission in 2023. Darah Shonin Ashton

Darah Shonin Ashton has been practicing Zen since 2009 and was made a Dharma Holder in 2019.  She served on the ZCO Board of Directors for 6 years and is the current Treasurer.  She also works as a Chiropractor and is the mother of a grown son and daughter.
